About this procedure
Purpose
Pass production information from one shift to the next so nothing is lost.
Scope
Applies to production supervisors at the example bakery plant at every shift change.
Responsibilities
The outgoing supervisor prepares the handoff; the incoming supervisor reviews it and asks questions.
Steps
- Meet the incoming supervisor at the production line.
- Review the shift notes: what ran, what is in progress and what is waiting.
- Walk the line together and point out open work orders.
- Share any equipment issues that were reported during the shift.
- Confirm which products are on hold and where they are stored.
- Record the handoff on the shift sheet and have both supervisors confirm it.
- Tell the team the handoff is complete.
Exceptions
If the incoming supervisor is not available, the outgoing supervisor stays until the plant manager names a covering lead.
